Week 3 of my internship at D&P involved lots of work with photoshoots and photography edits, as well as preparing online marketing and social media posts
At the beginning of the week on Monday it was shooting day for the Antalis Magazine. I headed in early to help pack up pieces for Rive Roshan at DDW and afterwards went to collect a package (unsuccessfully).
I had the chance to help out a bit on a product photo shoot and although I didn’t shoot the photos on camera, just assisted with lighting and suggesting shots, by observing my colleagues I was able to learn a few things:
- Planning – planning out each shot beforehand is very important, such as the angle, lighting and details e.g. close up or far shot. Take the actual product if you can and do a simple set up with a light to just get a visual image of the shots. These can be put onto a presentation in categories like ‘lighting’ ‘shadows’ ‘texture’ so when it comes to the shoot there is a systematic flow of shoots.
- Lighting – having good quality lights and the positioning should be carefully considered. A spotlight helps to really bring out colours or create shadows.
- Consider what it is shot on – how does this relate to the object? For this product – a magazine for Antalis – the product was shot on the paper it was printed on, creating harmony in the photos.
It was really enjoyable to just try something new and gain some new experience. It really emphasised to me just how important being versatile is – a designer that can demonstrate a range of skills is a real asset in a studio that has to operate across a range of sectors.
In this week I also worked on creating an instagram post for Form Editions – Ruben and Golnar’s platform to showcase new designers in curated exhibitions. I was able to make a number of iterations of the posts to show Golnar, becoming a useful exercise in core layout design principles.
