Evening Standard – final thoughts

Reflecting on my 3 month internship experience at the Evening Standard internship, overall I think it was a very rewarding experience and left with a lot of experience gained. It taught me quite a lot about what kind of design I want to specialise in as well as what kind of work I would prefer to avoid.

One of the positive experiences from this internship was the fast-paced nature of the work meaning that I got that to generate lots of work. This was very different from my first internship at the design studio where projects lasted a long time, and so I didn’t see many final outcomes. At the Evening Standard I would generate work everyday that then went live on their news website. It was a good feeling to see my work on a platform where I knew other people would see it too.

One of the things that I didn’t enjoy so much about this internship was that the work was always the same – there wasn’t as much variation as in the studio. My main tasks everyday were to make digital compositions for the news website, and generally this is all I did in a week. Sometimes I had the chance to do other designs for social media, like instagram carousels or posts. Towards the end of my internship I did do more editorial design on the actual newspaper which I enjoyed and felt was a welcome change.

From these experiences I did think that I didn’t really have much chance to try new skills or branch out like I did in the design studio. However, it did reinforce to me that I really enjoy editorial and print design. Going forward to final year I can see myself doing more projects in print or book design.
