D&P Week 1 Summary

Day 1

Introduction to the studio and understanding how files and projects are arranged and stored on the company’s computers.

Through their dropbox file system I learnt how important it is to record and store files in a systematic and organised way, so that everything can be uploaded and located easily, by all in the studio.

Also, I was introduced to Figma and went over the basics to get a quick grasp of the software. Design and Practice mainly use it to plan social media posts, utilising the ‘Frames’ to design on, instead of its UX properties.

Day 2

In the morning, I researched ideas for the Olin Papers instagram page, which D&P creates social media content for. It is a combined page for both advertising Olin papers used in various creative projects, and also inspirational or educational content, like posts about printing techniques or artists using paper-related materials in their work. Aside from this, I still didn’t have the chance to apply any design skills yet as no such work came my way. Later in the day I had the chance to chat to Ruben about my ideas, and we discussed which would be suitable for the Olin page and its overall aesthetic and content style.

Day 3

I’d had an idea for a post on a book that had been published using Olin paper, titled ‘Boja, lichens in Dalmatia’ which had been designed by Irma Boom. The studio wanted the book in order to take photos and create posts for the Olin instagram. I had the chance to contact the publisher and ask for the book to be delivered.

I spent the day putting my research for posts onto a Figma board with photos and text. At the end of the day I talked with Ruben again. The research on artist inspiration was approved but when presenting my idea to spotlight three small letterprint studios, he told me that this can be misleading, making people believe that Olin papers are made for just small crafts and short run artisanal prints which isn’t the case.

I learnt through this conversation to be more critical in what I am posting. As a studio, we speak on the Instagram through the voice of Olin Paper therefore the posts must express and align with their attitude and goals. I also learnt the importance of being critical in the way I research. Why am I researching? Is it relevant to its purpose? If I choose a picture does it illustrate what I’m trying to say instead of just being randomly chosen?

Day 4 & 5

Day 4 involved refining the Figma research I had done previously. I went into more depth so that if these were to be made into posts, the images and relevant captions would all be there already to be made into posts. By Friday I had more direction of the research I was doing and the posts I was making. I contacted another studio for some photography on a book they created and drafted posts on Figma.
